NPPA Northern Short Course Photojournalism Contest

WASHINGTON, 21 February 2010 — This is one of the winners of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Northern Short Course Photojournalism Contest that I helped judge yesterday, Saturday 20 February.
The competition was held at American University’s School of Communication.
We saw some terrific work produced by amateurs and professionals practicing a craft that, like so many other facets of journalism, is undergoing a difficult period of transition.

Backpack Journalism at Pulitzer Center

WASHINGTON 5 February 2010 — I recently took the idea of backpack journalism to the Pulitzer Center in Washington, DC. During an interview for Project: Report, an interesting endeavor sponsored by YouTube in conjunction with the Pulitzer Center and made possible by Sony and Intel, I discussed backpack journalism and what its practitioners should take to the field.
