WASHINGTON, DC, 13 January 2013 — This is the front cover of a book of photographs made by members of “Fotokids,” a non-profit founded in 1991 by former Reuters photojournalist Nancy McGirr, a long-time friend and colleague. Nancy gave me a signed copy of the book during my recent trip to Guatemala where I worked on video stories about gangs. Not only is the book a stunning visual tour of these kids’ lives. It also is testament to a woman who decided early on to toil in one of the darkest, most violent corners of the earth to make a difference in these kids’ lives. And she has.
With Nancy’s logistical support, I hope to conduct a Video Journalism Workshop at her organization this summer.
