PARAMARIBO, Suriname, 6 May 2014 Participants in my Backpack Video Journalism Workshop watch Chain Gang as a tool for learning how to use characters to drive home my lesson on building visual stories.
Im here for a week of workshops, presentations and interviews with local journalists, students and others. The central theme of the visit is the power of filmmaking with hand-held digital cameras and distribution over the Internet. We are now at an extraordinary crossroads of technology and communication. For the first time in the history of mankind we can communicate globally, instantly and in a language, the visual language, which supersedes the written and the spoken word. The young people in this workshop understand this.
I was invited to visit Suriname by the U.S. Embassy here.
